Get to know the Dominican Republic
There are lots of interesting things people don’t know about the DR. The Dominican Republic wasn’t actually independent until 1844, before then, the island was ruled by Haiti. Haiti resides on the other half of the island. The Dominican Republic almost has the same population as Georgia. It is sitting at 9 million people, Georgia has almost 11 million. Santa Domingo in the DR is the largest city, over 2 million people reside there. In 1966, the DR returned to democracy. The first president to start changing things into a democratic nation was Silvestre Antonio Guzman. He released more than 200 political prisoners and he eased what the media would censor or block. In 2005, the DR congress approved a free trade agreement with the US and Central American Nations. They didn’t join the accord until March of 2007. The DR sits at a whopping 800 miles of coastline and 200+ beaches. It is great for trade, swimming, vacations, etc. Tourism is the Dominican Republic’s largest industry. 6.1 mill
